RELIGION 200
2012
Christian Scriptures/History of the Church/Sacraments of Initiation
Mr. Mike Diffley
[email protected]
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Religion 200 is a study of three aspects of the Catholic Church: New Testament Scriptures, selected topics of church history from the early Christian communities through the present; and Sacramental Theology and specifically the Sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) emphasizing their structure, symbolism and meaning to the Catholic Faith. The student will be given an overview of the Christian Scriptures: the major themes of sacred writings and their impact on faith. Church History unfolds in the Acts of the Apostles and continues her history through apostolic times to the present. Sacramental theology is developed by a study of the nature and purpose of the Sacraments of the Church. This course will also explore the St. John Vianney High School Mission’s understanding of “excellence” in the “Catholic, Marianist tradition."
MATERIALS:
The textbook Jesus Christ His Mission and Ministry
The supplemental reading Flight of Faith My Miracle on the Hudson
“The New American Bible”
Reading Materials provided by the teacher
NOTEBOOK…for the purpose of journaling, cooperative work, and reflection
The novel Flight of Faith My Miracle on the Hudson will be evaluated through quizzes and summaries which will be completed in class and sometimes as homework. Beginning in February, I will be using the novel in class on a regular basis.
GRADING
Grades will be based on an average of total points accumulated on work completed through the semester class and final exam.
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated through quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, homework, class work, journaling and final exam. The condition of all work turned in is a reflection of the time effort and sense of personal responsibility and respect of the individual (and will be graded accordingly).
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
Religion 200 is designed to teach the Catholic Faith and help students explore their own personal relationship with God. Student behavior must be such that these two goals can be accomplished. All members of this classroom are members of not only an academic community, but also a faith community and are expected to show respect for themselves and the people and place around them. Each member of this classroom is also expected to take responsibility for his actions.
To achieve success in this class a student will:
* Be on time for class and ready to work when class begins (which includes having the appropriate book(s) and or materials)
* Have a positive attitude
* Make respectful choices in the way you present yourself, in your interaction with one another and your interaction with faculty and staff.
* actively and constructively participate in class by:
* completing homework and readings
* working collaboratively and positively in group exercises and class discussions
* completing assignments on time
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
Students who turn in work late will be penalized and receive only half credit for their work. After one week, assignments will be marked as missing, with a grade of zero.
NOTE – Bullying, Plagiarism or Cheating:
Students are expected to adhere to the guidelines presented in the “St. John Vianney High School Student and Parent Handbook." Failure to do so may result in appropriate disciplinary action.
